STATEMENT ON COPTIC CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY’S CONCERNS OVER SECURITY ENVIRONMENT IN EGYPT

May 31, 2017

Recent attacks demonstrate that violent Islamic extremists are targeting the Coptic Christian community in Egypt due to their religious and ethnic backgrounds.

Politicians from the across the political spectrum have been contacted by Australians concerned about rising tensions in Egypt and the potential risks associated with returning people of the Coptic Christian faith to the region.

I have written to the Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to ask him for assurance that where the Australian Government has any evidence that it is unsafe for individuals or families to return to Egypt due to their religious or ethnic backgrounds, that they will not be sent back into harm’s way.

It is not unreasonable to expect the Turnbull Government to be making decisions on protection claims based on the current political and security environment.
