DEMENTIA ACTION WEEK: A LITTLE SUPPORT GOES A LONG WAY

21 September 2021

This Dementia Action Week (20 – 26 September) the Federal member for Blair, Shayne Neumann is asking the community to consider how it can be dementia-friendly.

Mr Neumann said that dementia impacts close to half a million Australians, with that number set to double over the next few decades.

“Dementia affects so many people in the community, with about 1.6 million Australians involved in the care of someone living with dementia,” Mr Neumann said.

“There are many preconceptions about dementia that need to be cleared up so that those living with dementia and their carers can live active and fulfilling lives.

“Dementia Australia reports that discrimination towards people with dementia is very common.

“That is why Dementia Action Week highlights that many people living with dementia can live well for many years after diagnosis.

“In addition, this week we focus on supporting and celebrating carers of people living with dementia.”

Mr Neumann said he hopes the campaign will continue to lead discussions about discrimination and the impact it has on people living with dementia, their families and carers.

“The first thing we can do is commit to supporting those who provide care and not neglecting those living with dementia.

“This can be an isolating and frightening disease for everyone involved.”

Mr Neumann has encouraged local residents to share stories about their loved ones living with dementia and those who provide care.

“It’s important to tell stories and bring dementia out into the light.

“The biggest risk factor for dementia is age, and with our population living longer, we will see more people we know and love either living with the disease or providing care for someone.

“It’s time we looked at how we can make our communities, our clubs, groups and businesses more dementia-friendly.”

Mr Neumann has encouraged members of the community to share their stories on social media to tag the posts with one or more of the following hashtags: #dementia #DementiaActionWeek #DementiaAwareness #DementiaSupport.
