An Albanese Labor Government will invest $12.5 million in biotech firm Cytiva to grow the advanced manufacturing of high-value medicines in Ipswich, supporting up to 1,000 jobs.

Cytiva is working with Springfield City Group and other partners to expand its local bio-manufacturing of high value medicines, and boost our local biotech industry.

Federal Labor’s funding commitment of $12.5 million would be used to purchase high-tech manufacturing equipment at Cytiva’s Springfield BioPark site for the production of key raw materials in biological drugs and therapies, including vaccines, antibodies, proteins, mRNA, gene and cell therapies.

This cutting-edge infrastructure will secure the production lines for bio-therapies, ensuring patients can get access to high-value medicines when they need them, as well as supporting hundreds of jobs in the bio-manufacturing sector in the long term.

The project is expected to support up to 500 direct jobs and up to 1,000 indirect ongoing jobs, once complete.

Importantly, this funding contribution will boost Australia’s sovereign capability in medical manufacturing, particularly mRNA vaccine production, which will support our economic recovery and future pandemic preparedness.

If elected, an Albanese Labor Government will continue to work closely with key partners, including the Queensland Government and Springfield City Group, to ensure this game-changing new manufacturing capability is fast-tracked as quickly as possible.

The Liberal-National Government have overseen the loss of 85,000 manufacturing jobs since they came to office. Australia ranks dead last on manufacturing self-sufficiency compared to other OECD countries. Unless we act, Australia will be in the bottom half of all countries when it comes to economic growth over the next decade.

Labor’s commitment to Cytiva is part of our commitment to bring advanced manufacturing jobs back home and build a future made here in Australia.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Industry and Innovation Ed Husic:

“Labor believes the next decade should be one where we make things here at home again – with Australian workers, Australian resources and Australian ingenuity.

“This investment in Cytiva will be a real shot in the arm that will grow our medical manufacturing capability at home and ensure Australians have quick and easy access to lifesaving therapies and vaccines.

“It will have long-term health and economic benefits for Ipswich and for Australia, and provide opportunities for the broader industry through domestic supply chains, clinical trials and research and development.”

Comments attributable to Member for Blair Shayne Neumann:

“This investment is a huge win for Ipswich and Springfield.

“I have always been passionate about the health needs of our community and bringing more jobs to the region, so I’m pleased to have secured this commitment from Labor.

“This is all about creating more secure local jobs and growing industries right here in the Western Corridor.”

Comments attributable to Member for Oxley Milton Dick:

“Greater Springfield is one of the fastest growing regions in the country, so we need to be investing in the jobs of the future today.

“Recently, I announced an Advanced Manufacturing Taskforce in Springfield to bring business and community leaders together to drive investment and jobs in our region, so I’m proud that Labor is making this commitment today.

“Labor will deliver a better future for our community with more well paid, skilled jobs – just like the ones being created at Cytiva.”
