LABOR COMMITS TO IPSWICH BASKETBALL STADIUM EXPANSION

12 March 2022

An Albanese Labor Government is committed to the expansion of the Ipswich Basketball stadium.

Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann said an Albanese Labor Government will provide $2 million towards an extension to the existing stadium if elected at the upcoming Federal Election.

“Ipswich Basketball has grown to the point where the current facility at Booval cannot meet the demand of the growing popularity of the sport,” Mr Neumann said.

“The Ipswich Basketball Association is one of the fastest growing associations in Queensland, with 56 per cent growth in female membership and 39 per cent growth in male membership

“I have a long history supporting Ipswich Basketball, having competed at the current stadium in my youth.

“I am excited to see more young people and adults enjoy basketball.”

Mr Neumann said the extension would deliver an extra full-sized basketball court, above the existing carpark area, with some carpark upgrades.

“This will provide Ipswich Basketball with a total of five courts for club competition purposes, with four suitable for representative competitions.

“Residents of Ipswich have a clear choice at this election and if we are to deliver this funding boost then we need to elect a Labor Government.

“The Morrison-Joyce Government has ignored this region for the past eight years.

“Ipswich is the fastest growing city in Queensland and it is clear only a Labor Government will invest in local communities like ours.

“I am determined to keep fighting for more social infrastructure across the Blair electorate.”

The JBS Arena, home to Ipswich Basketball, escaped major flood damage in the recent floods, unlike 2011 where the facility was almost devastated.

Mr Neumann said this announcement demonstrates Labor’s ongoing support to the Ipswich community, particularly as it rebuilds following the most recent floods.
