DUTTON MUST EXPLAIN HOW HE ALLOWED ILLEGAL FIREARMS INTO AUSTRALIA

March 14, 2018

Peter Dutton must immediately explain how illegal firearms were waved through Australia’s border on his watch, with a buyback scheme reported to cost taxpayers up to $1 million.

Reports state that at least 120 Riverman Operator Assisted Firearms – a bolt action rifle – were allowed into Australia under Dutton’s watch because they were wrongly classified by customs officials.

Since the guns hit Australia’s shores, officials have been forced to reclassify the guns as a prohibited item, and then write to owners asking them to return the weapons “for compensation equal to the price you paid for your rifle”.

Mistakes like this put Australians at risk and taxpayers have to foot the bill for an expensive buyback scheme.

Peter Dutton is a tick-and-flick Minister who has consistently failed to manage his portfolio.

Dutton now has unprecedented powers over Australia’s domestic security agencies with his newly-minted mega Department – there is no excuse for this latest failure to manage Australia’s strict and essential customs operations.
