DUTTON’S DESPERATE TO DISTRACT FROM 457 FAILURE

February 14, 2017

Another day, another desperate stunt by Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to distract from the Turnbull Government’s complete failure to stand up for local workers.

Rather than dwelling on the past, the Immigration Minister should get out and talk to Australians who are worried about how the 457 visa program is impacting on their ability to get a job.

Labor is serious about reform in the 457 program.

That's why Opposition Leader Bill Shorten tabled a Private Members Bill in Parliament to toughen the rules around 457 visas.

Labor’s 457 Private Members Bill will make sure that where there are local workers ready and willing to work, employers will have to advertise and genuinely try to fill jobs locally before recruiting from overseas.

The Immigration Minister can distort data as much as he likes, but the truth is that the mining boom is over and Australia’s employment landscape has changed.

If the Immigration Minister was genuine about supporting local jobs, he would stop grandstanding in Parliament and immediately support Labor’s Private Members Bill.

Only Labor is standing up for local jobs.
