RESERVE FORCES DAY

30 June 2021

The 1st of July is Reserve Forces Day, when we recognise our Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reserves personnel who have served in all wars, conflicts and peace-keeping operations, national disasters and emergencies.

Reserve Forces Day is an important day that helps to raise awareness of the ordinary Australians doing extraordinary things to serve their country.

Reservists come from all walks of life and have served in the Navy, Army and Air Force with distinction alongside their full-time counterparts in domestic and overseas operations throughout Australia’s history.

This has never been more so than over the last 18 months through their assistance to communities with bushfire recovery, the COVID-19 pandemic and floods, when they have provided vital surge capacity for regular ADF units.

They have served in some of our most important military campaigns, such as the Kokoda Track during World War Two, as well as more recent conflicts and operations, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Timor-Leste and the Solomon Islands.

Their service has often kept them away from home and family for long periods of time and has meant they have had to put their lives and careers on hold for our country.

On this day, it is important to acknowledge the wonderful support of families and employers, which is essential to the ongoing success of Defence Reserves, and organisations like the Defence Reserves Association and the Reserve Forces Day Council.

Our Reservists provide a valuable cultural link between the community and the military, helping to build valuable community support for, and understanding of, Defence.

Reserve Forces Day is an opportunity to honour the service and sacrifice all those have given up their time to be part of the ADF Reserves.
