This week is National Landcare week and Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, has praised the efforts of local Landcare groups for their contribution to the environment in the electorate of Blair.

When former Prime Minister Bob Hawke established Landcare Australia, he sought to establish a national movement of Australians – bringing together farmers and environmentalists – who cared for the land.

Mr Neumann has said the strength of our regions was only as strong as our soil, waterways, vegetation and air.

“Landcare was gutted in the Liberals’ 2014 Budget, losing almost $500 million in funding and facing further cuts in later years,” he said.

The recent floods, drought and bushfires highlight the importance of conservation and land management while the COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us of our appreciation of the outdoors.

Mr Neumann thanked local Landcare organisations in Ipswich, the Somerset Region and the Karana Downs region. These organisations continue to make a significant contribution to our environment and local community.

“The Bremer Catchment Association have worked tirelessly to restore the banks of the Bremer River while other organisations like West Moreton Landcare have made considerable progress in rehabilitating environmental corridors,” said Mr Neumann.

“The Landcare community shows us what Australians can achieve when we unite and come together – a message that’s now more important than ever,” Mr Neumann said.
