Federal Labor will deliver funding for an Indian community centre in South East Queensland’s fast-growing Western Corridor.

If elected, an Albanese Labor Government will commit to provide funding of $3.5 million towards the building costs of ‘India House’ in Springfield.

Community organisations such as the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland, Global Organisation for People of Indian Origin, and Australia India Business Council have been very active for years, but have been without a permanent home.

India House will provide a dedicated hub for community activities, programs and services, and serve as a meeting place for various local Indian community and business associations and clubs.

Labor’s investment recognises the active participation of the Indian community in adding value in supporting Australia’s eighth largest trading partner and fifth largest export market, and this initiative will bring economic, cultural and community benefits to Queensland, and the Ipswich and Springfield region.

Only an Albanese Labor Government will deliver a better future for Queensland’s multicultural communities.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Andrew Giles:

“Labor understands that the Indian diaspora plays such a vital role in making Australia the most successful multicultural society in the world.

“Labor’s funding commitment acknowledges the value and needs of the local Indian community in Queensland.

“Springfield is a truly multicultural community and Labor is proud to support the local Indian community in sharing and celebrating this diversity through this investment in India House.”

Comments attributable to Member for Blair Shayne Neumann:

“We have been listening to Queensland’s Indian community and understand how important India House will be to the preservation of Indian culture.”

“I’m thrilled to support the work of the and to support their efforts to provide the Indian community with a dedicated centre that it deserves.

“Ipswich’s eastern suburbs have one of the most culturally diverse populations in Australia and we are a more vibrant community because of that diversity.”

Comments attributable to Member for Oxley Milton Dick:

“Greater Springfield is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, so we need to be investing in community infrastructure.

“I want to commend Dr Maha Sinnathamby, Chairman of Springfield City Group, for generously donating the land for this building and thank all the donors for their invaluable contributions.

“This commitment is part of Labor’s plan to deliver a better future for our multicultural communities here in Springfield.”
