LABOR COMMITS $4 MILLION TO UPGRADE IPSWICH SHOWGROUNDS

14 April 2022

An Albanese Labor Government invest $4 million to upgrade the Ipswich Showgrounds.

Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, said this this will include $2.5 million for general upgrades as part of the stage three redevelopment and a further $1.5 million to improve amenities, which will be utilised by the emergency relief centre during disasters.

“Ipswich is the fastest growing city in the state and needs adequate infrastructure to support the community,” Mr Neumann said.

“These upgrades will include toilets, showers and privacy for locals when emergencies strike.

“This project is a critical piece of infrastructure to future proof Ipswich against the impacts of devastating natural disasters.

“In addition, the stage three redevelopment of the Showgrounds is an important step towards the Show Society’s ambitious plans for an Ipswich Events and Exhibition Centre.

“This will have facilities to transform the centre into a purpose-built emergency relief centre for use by the entire region.”

Federal Labor will fund the amenities through our new Disaster Ready Fund.

Labor’s Shadow Minister for Disaster and Emergency Management, Senator Murray Watt, said an Albanese Labor Government will revamp the Morrison Government’s failed Emergency Response Fund and invest up to $200 million per year on disaster prevention and resilience.

“Three years after it was announced, the $4.8 billion Emergency Response Fund has not spent a cent on disaster recovery and has not completed a single disaster prevention project,” Senator Watt said.

“All it has done is earn the Morrison Government over $800 million in interest.

“Labor will put these funds to work to keep Queenslanders safe, keep properties safe and reduce the cost of repairing damage from natural disasters.

“Only an Albanese Labor Government will build a better future for disaster prone communities.
