SHAYNE NEUMANN AND KAMBU HEALTH CELEBRATE NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

27 May 2022

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann today attended an event at Kambu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Health (Kambu Health) in Ipswich to celebrate National Reconciliation Week.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2022, which runs from 27 May to 3 June, is ‘Be Brave. Make Change’.

Mr Neumann said today’s event was a great way to mark the occasion, which was all about recognising the past so we can build a better future together.

“The Uluru Statement from the Heart is about Reconciliation too, and that’s why the newly-elected Albanese Labor Government will be brave and make change by delivering it in full because it’s the right thing to do.

“We will listen to First Nations people and work across the Parliament to get this done.

“The reason a Voice to Parliament is so important is because it will give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a chance to have a say on laws and policies that affect them.

“It’s not about creating a new chamber of parliament as some have suggested, but simply about providing advice for the Government of the day,” he said.

Mr Neumann used today’s event to reiterate his pre-election commitment to invest $2.5 million in Kambu Health.

“This includes $2 million for upgrades to the Roderick Street clinic to build new, fit-for-purpose facilities to meet growing demand in the Ipswich region.

“The new Federal Labor Government will also provide an additional $500,000 to relocate the Children and Family Centre to Kambu’s kindergarten and long day care facility in Silkstone.

“The Ipswich region is the fastest-growing local government area in Queensland, and by 2031 the local Indigenous population is expected to exceed 130,000 people.

“The LNP Government abandoned people in Ipswich following their election in 2013, not bothering to invest in health infrastructure to keep up with the growing population and demand.

“Kambu Health supports 5,500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and Labor’s investment will make sure they meet the needs of their clients now and into the future.

“The new Children and Family Centre will mean medical and allied specialists can provide a holistic service to children, including health checks, as they prepare to start school.

“Only an Albanese Labor Government will invest in the health infrastructure Australia and the Ipswich community needs,” Mr Neumann said.

Kambu Health is a community controlled, not-for-profit charitable entity established to provide health and community services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the Ipswich and West Moreton region.
